Patient Transport Service Apprenticeships

West Midlands Ambulance Service’s non-emergency Patient Transport Service (PTS) plays a key role in ensuring thousands of patients from around the Region get to their outpatient appointments each day. Every year, our staff complete an incredible 1,000,000 PTS journeys.

As a Trust, we strive to have a well-trained workforce, equipped with the right technology to ensure the highest quality service is provided to our patients.

The Trust’s apprentice programme is open to anyone* who is interested in starting a career in the NHS Ambulance Service.

Whilst working alongside our PTS staff, apprentices are given the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills over a 12 month period. At the end of the year all of our apprentices have the opportunity to continue their career and apply for substantive posts available within the service.

pts-scott-kenzieScott Kenzie did just that. He started his apprenticeship programme in Coventry in August 2012 and has now been appointed into a permanent full time position within the service.

Scott said: “The apprenticeship provided a great opportunity to gain a qualification, whilst providing invaluable ‘on the job’ experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the course, working with the crews and getting real hands on experience.”

In partnership with Performance Through People, WMAS offers successful candidates the opportunity to obtain an intermediate level apprenticeship in Health (Healthcare Support Service) qualification, whilst gaining first hand on the job experience.

*The entry requirements for those interested in the scheme are:

  • Two GCSE’s grade C equivalent or above
  • Full driving licence (must not exceed 3 points)
  • Appointments will be subject to a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (you will be advised of the process by the WMAS)

All of our apprentice opportunities are advertised via NHS Jobs. Potential applicants can register with the jobs site and request for notification alerts to be sent to them, as and when such positions become available.

*Please note this vacancy is not suitable for applicants holding a level 4 qualification or above.
